Supination - A Quick Overview

The words supination and underpronation or under pronation mean the same thing. In this piece of content we will use the term supination from here on.

The movement of a neutral foot through your stride is to land on your heel then transfer weight through to the middle of your foot. Initially it is the outside edge of your foot which takes the forces from your weight which is quickly transferred to the arch of your foot. The arch flexes downwards like a spring to dissipate the force of your weight transfer from the heel and spread the forces more evenly.

As the arch partially collapses, distributing pressure more evenly across the foot which rolls inwards naturally as a result of the arch flattening. This is called pronation and is normal.

As you continue forward through your stride your weight is lifted from the arch which springs back slightly as your weight moves onto the ball of your foot and your big toe to allow for push off by your toes to continue propulsion forward.

Most supinators have foot arches that do not collapse as far as a person with a normal arch and so the roll of the foot inwards during the mid stance does not occur or occurs much less.

The result of this is that the outside of the foot continues to bear the force of your weight transferance which remains into the push off phase of your stance where the small outer toes are forced to provide the force. In a normal arched person the big toe and inner area of the ball of the foot together provide a greater share of these forces (which they should as they are bigger).

How Supination Affects You

Now I have explained the mechanics you'll understand that people with high arches which tend to be inflexible and not collapse to the same degree as a normal arched foot, will tend to supinate.

It should be noted here that it is not just high arched feet that supinate. Reading articles on the internet may give this impression. But the reality is that alignments of the leg bones and foot structures of of normal and even flat footed people can also lead to supination. Also a conscious effort to counteract flat footedness, for example, can also lead to supination as a habit.

The result of all this is that the feet of a supinator will experience pain from the abnormal pressure on the outside of the foot. This also affects the orientation of the leg bones and muscles which are dragged out of alignment and eventually causes pain in the legs, knees, hips and back.

The walking shoes below are designed for supinators and provide support that should help even out foot pressure distribution with a raised area under the foot arch. The arch can rest on this and thereby provide a more even pressure distribution, relieving the outside of the foot and the front smaller toes.

  • Top Arch Support
  • Full Cushioning
  • Removable Footbed
  • Great Brand
  • Luxurious Comfort
  • Great for Road Surfaces
  • Great for Treadmills
  • Power & Fitness Walker Shoe
  • Width Fittings

Cons

  • A few people might find it too cushioned for treadmill walking - others will find it fine.
  • Not suited to trail walking or wet areas.

This shoe is for you if fitness or power walking is your passion and you need a walking shoe for your supination. It is also great if you do most of your walking on a treadmill.

We have a full length review of the Brooks Glycerin 16 here.

One of the new technologies from Brooks is a new DNA midsole which runs full length and is designed to provide you with an ultra-soft feel.

The shoe is designed for walkers with normal to high arches with strategic support to help offset the natural tendency for under pronation from your more rigid, less flexible arches.

The shoe upper is very breathable being constructed in mesh. It can stretch in both directions so providing an excellent fit which can adapt to your foot shape.

The Brooks Glycerin 16 has good cushioning without you losing responsiveness.

The outsole is durable yet flexible, designed to flex naturally between the forefoot and midsole.

The footbed provides support where you need it and when you need it to dissipate the forces in your mid stride and cushioing to the toe area to disperse forces from your push off.

To recap - this is an excellent shoe most suited to strenuous walking both on the road and treadmill and for supinators as well as the neutral gaited.

The good thing about Brooks is that they cater for the underpronator where many other companies focus on the mainstream.

This is another great and lightweight shoe with excellent cushioning and support for you if you have normal to high arches and supinators.

It is suited to treadmill and concrete road walkers but not to walking on wet grass etc.

The design is less 'out and out' super athletic though there are certainly overtones. The smart flat knit upper is flexible and provides you with a more casual look.

This is a good design move since it leaves you with more choices of when and where to wear.

It is still not formal office attire but you would look great out shopping in them, for instance.

The cushioning and liner make for a really comfortable fit.

Add to that good heel support and you have a shoe suited to supinators for all day wear.

All things considered it really is a steal at the prices on offer.

If you have wider than average feet then this shoe is not going to be a great fit as it only comes in a medium width fitting.

But if you are normal or slightly narrow footed it should fit well.

Order your normal size unless you are slightly wide footed and determined to buy in which case size up 1/2.

ASICS have an excellent name for quality and good design in the world of sports shoes.

The DynaFlyte 3 continues the DynaFlyte model range, improving on its predecessor the DynaFlyte 2.

ASICS have developed something they call the I.G.S or Impact Guidance System which essentially is their name for the interaction of their cushioning and support systems to guide the foot along the line of the optimal gait.

The shoe is particularly suited to fitness and treadmill walkers and maybe a little to sporty for most people as casual wear. That said it is certainly comfortable enough as you will see if you check out comments over at the ASICS site.

The DynaFlyte 2 had very good ratings and this shoe is an improvement. As it is very new there are limited reviews on this particular model.

You can still pick up the DynaFlyte 2 if you would rather rely on ratings but I think this shoe is an improvement.

You will find the footbox a little less flexible than the Glycerin 16 and Revel II but otherwise the upper is flexible and improved over the version 2.

The cushioning is provided by a gel system under the heel which helps distribute the forces as you place your feet down initially.

This syncs with a special foam material branded FlyteFoam - which is essentially a very light cushioing material in the midsole. The combination provides a great level of cushioning with very lightweight structure.

I have provided a picture of the DynaFlyte 2 here to show the differences and as you can see it is at a lower price point.

Once stocks are cleared the DynaFlyte 3 will have more reviews to rely on.

That said the improvements to the mesh upper and improved cushioning of the latest model are probably worth going for.

If you are looking for a dedicated walking shoe with good supinator support then you could fare far worse than picking the Dynaflyte 2 or 3 for your next model.

ASICS Gel Venture 6 Trail Shoe

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on the Amazon product page at the time of purchase will apply to the purchase of this product.

Pros

  • A trail shoe for supinators
  • A little firmer but shallower support than others
  • A cheaper option
  • Great Brand
  • Great Grip
  • Rearfoot Gel Cushioning

Cons

  • Only Standard Width Fitting (but quite roomy)
  • A bit lightweight for trails
  • Not waterproof
  • Previous models had better support

The ASICS Gel Venture line has been a dependable and popular shoe for many years.

The current model seems to have taken a little bit of a step backwards but still provides support for you if you supinate.

Coming in considerably cheaper than the models reviewed above, it scores highly for value for money and is a great choice if you are on a bit of a budget.

The same rearfoot Gel cushioning system is employed to cushion the foot against the forces from impact as you step.

The same technology is applied to the forefoot area too. Other than that the similarities with the DynaFlyte end which you might expect.

This is a good shoe for the supinator on a budget and looking to walk not too challenging trails. You'd walk a long way to beat it for the price.

It is a common misconception that supination is caused only by high arches and that flat feet cause overpronation.

Whilst this is the norm there is a surprisingly large minority of people who supinate depsite having flat feet. And a number of high arched people who overpronate.

There is quite a lot of misinformation around the internet leading you to believe only high arched feet cause supination. This is because misinformation is copied from site to site without proper understanding by the authors.

It really annoys me that many sites reviewing shoes, recommend shoes that even a moderate investigation shows are unsuited for the purpose that is intended by you, the viewer.

At WooWalkers we do try our very best to make sure the information we give you is pertinent. Of course your feet are individual and we do not know exactly your circumstances when you visit, but rest assured we really do have your best interest at heart.

I contacted Saucony to be sure that this shoe was in fact designed for supinators as well as suited to flat feet. Ashley who works at Saucony assured me they were and we had quite the conversation. It turned out Ashley is a supinator with flat feet!

I then spent an hour or so investigating and found that there are quite a few similar people. For some it seems it is just the way their bones and muscles align and for others a consious habit to compensate for their condition - in fact over-compensate.

Anyway this Saucony shoe is designed especially for you if you are a flat footed supinator and is also suited to people who are just flat footed.

The Echelon 7 features a roomy toe box to let your toes spread out and elements in the heel and midsole to align your foot for a good gait angle.

The Saucony Echelon 7 thankfully comes in multiple widths. The quality EVERUN insole or footbed, which adds cushion and spring to your step, is removable so you can insert your own custom orthotics if you wish.

Reflective elements on the heel are more aesthetic than bright. The mesh upper is flexible and accommodating. It is the successor of the Echelon 6.

Note that this is not for high arched walkers specifically though custom orthotics can adapt it.

Vionic as a company is a foot manufacturer that targets users who need better than average support.

Their products are not full of marketing hype as you might find with some, but rather provide a mid tech solution to better support.

It is really very hard to find specific shoes that are casual in style and not the sporty version. Some older people feel a little self conscious in sneakers and some people just want a bit more restrained style.

This is a good looking shoe that has a supportive insole and is designed to help supinators and suit those who don't want a sports style shoe.

The shoe has room in the toe box and mostly very positive reviews from verified buyers on the Saucony site.

If you are looking for a comfortable every day wear shoe rather than an 'out and out' exercise based sporty shoe then these might just be the ticket between style and support.

I believe they are comfortable and effective and I do like the breathable leather uppers and styling a lot!

It is a good supportive shoe that will go with most dress styles and there are multiple colorways.

The downside is that it only comes in a standard width fitting but is true to size in that.

If you have wider than average feet it may not be such a good fit.

The American Podiatric Medical Association approves these shoes.

These shoes are really very comfortable according to an older friend of mine.

I hesitate to mention they are in their late 80's and have suffered for a long while with foot pain which these shoes have almost miraculously alleviated. I hesitate because these shoes are not just for old folks!

They can hardly be said to be the most fashionable shoe on the block but if you have foot pain that will be the least of your worries.

The shoe offers very good support that may or may not suit your particular foot type. That said even the top tech brands support do not suit all comers.

The Orthofeet Breeze come in Normal, Wide and Extra Wide width fittings and in half sizes - so you should have no problem getting a fit.

If the top quality orthotic that is supplied does not suit your particular foot shape then they are removable to allow you to fit your preferred alternative orthotic.

On way or another the shoe should suit you if you are just looking for a comfortable and non-sporty looking, all day wear comfortable shoe. You may or may not need your own orthotics though.

If you have bunions or other foot pain then they will be in the top models to help alleviate it.

These shoes are built for comfort and come very highly recommended.

This has to be your favorite slipper if you want a proper fitting with some support.

Made by the orthotic oriented shoe company, Vionic, the slipper is made with a proper EVA supportive footbed to give your arches a break as you go about the house.

The textile upper provides a bit of comfort but if you get them dirty they are not so easy to clean.

Obviously as a slipper, you should not be out in the yard with them. they are for just around the house.

The velcro upper mades for an easily adjustable fix and you should not be pulling the velcro on and off so it wears out - the bane of my life - it's a slip on after all.

A great buy and a great present!  Lots of colors available too.
